Robert Calvo piece (orange) over Kirk Palmer's Debris Sketches. Kirk's elegant, intimate paintings of piles, flood damaged goods lingering on driveways, was a way to process the visible remains of back-to-back, home-wrecking hurricanes. Calvo's piece brings the piles under one roof.

Artist StatementPinellas County residents cleared their homes, creating debris piles in their yards after hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. These piles of furniture, toys, and cardboard boxes reflected their anxiety and vulnerability. The debris also gained political and racial significance as people used the piles as a symbol to blame city leaders amid the ongoing threat of climate change. These sketches, which I call ‘The Terrain of Our Undoing,’ continue to influence my artistic exploration of the American political landscape.” Kirk Palmer
